552,093. Moulding brassieres and other articles of wearing apparel. BRITISH CELANESE Ltd. Sept. 16, 1941, No. 11837. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1940. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups VII and VIII] The material to form a brassiere (or hat, cap or suspensory), made of fabric comprising filaments or fibres of a thermoplastic derivative of cellulose, is first shaped to form a hollow article larger internally than the desired article, and is then moulded and shrunk to the desired shape and size. The resultant article then keeps its shape on washing, wringing &c. The initial shaping may be carried out by pressing between male and female mould parts 4, 11, the parts 11 having removable caps 17 ; the material may be forced over the cap by hand or by mechanical means. The caps are then removed, and the moulding is then effected between the parts 4 and the bare parts 11. Channels 5, 6, 9 and 12 conduct heated fluid (steam, water) to the mould surfaces. The caps 17 may be made of aluminium, copper or lead. In a modification, the initial shaping may be carried out on a large mould, the shaped article being then transferred to a smaller mould. Wetting during the initial shaping may be by means of wet towels. The material may be formed of an outer layer of fabric of natural silk, artificial silk, cotton or a mixture of these, an intermediate layer of fabric of thermoplastic cellulose derivative with or without cotton, and an inner facing of the same fabric as the outer layer or of different fabric. The fabrics may be woven, circular knitted, warp knitted or netted.
