[Class 100 (iv)] The carriage T of a typewriting, or like machine, is provided at its ends with two closed casings, formed of two parts 2, 3, between which is arranged the platen 30, and the casings enclose all the mechanism for actuating the assembly of members which control the various adjustments of the typewriter with the exception of the manual actuating members of the carriage which project through openings in the casing. The transverse members T of the carriage are connected to the parts 2 of the casings and the parts 2, 3 are connected by a tongue 4 so as to enclose the mechanism as indicated at the left hand of the machine in Fig. 1. Associated with this casing are a number of parts, viz.: a key 7 for carriage release, key 8 for left margin stop, knob 9 and scale 10 for line-spacing, knob 11 for platen release, and a spacing-lever 5 extends through a slot in the casing. Similar controls 15, 16, 17 are provided in connection with the right-hand casing. The platen 30 is mounted between the casings so as to be readily disconnectible. It is normally rotated by a ratchet mechanism operated by the lever 5, and acting through a clutch 33, 34 which drives a hollow shaft 31 mounted in ball bearings 32. A similar shaft 31 is mounted in the right-hand casing and each shaft 31 is integral with a disc 36 provided with a diametrical projection 37, Fig. 3 (not shown), which engages a similarly shaped groove at each end of the roller 30. The roller can be withdrawn laterally when a shaft 38, which normally connects the two hollow shafts 31, is withdrawn by means of a knob 39. The shafts 31 may be operated by hand wheels 22, 23, or can be set in position by a handle 13 acting through gears 44, 45.
