[Class 73] In a device for applying adhesive tape to the lid and body of a cylindrical can, the tape is held on a guide 10 adjacent to the track 2, along which the can is rolled, and in front of a pressure roller 24 which, while pressing the tape on to the can, is adapted to yield to permit the can to travel to a second pressure device 29 for completing the adhesion. The cans are rolled along the track, which is adjustable in height to accommodate cans of different diameters, by an endless belt 7, a lever 40, rocked automatically, permitting one can at a time to pass to the track. The tape is fed from a spool 321 having a tensioning-device, over a guide-wheel 14 to the guide 10 which is held by a spring 15 in normal position. As the can moves along the guide, the tensioned tape between it and the end of the guide is pressed against a knife 35 adjustably mounted in the machine, after which the guide is free to return to normal position, the parts being so constructed that a loop of tape forms over the guide-wheel 14 to ensure that a length projects beyond the end of the guide 10 for engagement between the next can and the roller 24. The severed end of the tape is pressed into position by the roller 29. After the can has passed the rollers 24, 29 are returned to starting position by springs 27, 33 respectively.
