607,083. Eddy-current brakes. WINTHER, M. P. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2501. Convention date, June 14, 1944. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] A slip coupling comprises a non-magnetic member on one rotor disposed between magnetic members traversed by flux produced by a field coil, and a second field system may be provided to co-operate with an extension of the non-magnetic member to act as a brake thereon. As shown, the conducting drum 115 is supported on a number of rods 126 secured in a spider 132 secured to one shaft and is between magnetic member 105 having teeth 107 on the other shaft and a field member having a coil 183 disposed between two sets of annular laminae 187, 189 co-operating with teeth 107. The coil is energized by an auxiliary generator 153, 155 on shaft 131. The drum 115 is extended to co-operate with a stationary braking field member having two sets of teeth 124 separated by a coil 126 excited when it is desired to decelerate the drum, an axiallyextending tooth 108 supported in the stationary frame being placed opposite each pair of aligned teeth 124 to complete the magnetic circuit of the brake. A fan 111 may draw air axially through the outer part of the machine, the rings 187, 189 having apertures 188 for this purpose, and through the drum between teeth 124 and 107 or the machine may be oil or water cooled. In a modification, the wound member of the brake is outside the drum which has a magnetic lining at that end of the machine to complete the braking magnetic circuit.
