[Class 51 (i)] A continuously operated refuse destructor comprises a common combustion chamber fitted with three grates, on the first of which the refuse is dried and then passes to the second, more steeply inclined grate where it is burnt and passes to the third where combustion is completed, the chamber being divided by vaulting; the steep grate may be supplied with hot or cold air or steam. The grates 15, 16, 17 are mounted in a single chamber divided by vaulting 9 with a -vertical wall 10 whereby combustion gases are deflected from the grates 16, 17 over the mechanically-operated grate 15 to dry the refuse fed through a charging hole B. The combustion gases pass through an air heater 13 to a boiler 34. Air, heated by the heater 13 passes through pipes 27, 28 to air channels 29 in the walls to blast outlets 30. A second blower 32 supplies air or steam to hollow lateral parts 35, 36 of the grates 15, 16, passing thence to a blast outlet 31. Dust is led by channels 19, 20, 24 to a water channel 23.
