594,171. Submarine cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WESTON, W. K. June 18, 1945, No. 15416. [Class 36] The repeater 1, or its case, of a coaxial submarine signalling cable is connected to the outer conductor 3, which is in contact with the water, by a circuitous conducting lead 5 so as to provide a long seepage path. The lead 5 may be in the form of a spiral or a zig-zag and is joined to conductor 3 at 8. The repeater 1 is surrounded by a water-repellent insulation 62 and is joined to the cable insulation 6, e.g. polythene, by insulation 61 which may be introduced under pressure by injection moulding after the lead 5 has been secured. The insulation 62 may also be formed at the same time. The lead 5 may be insulated before the insulation 61 is added. The repeater 1 may be joined to a piece of stub cable which is afterwards joined to the main cable in usual manner. The cable armouring 7 may be extended over the repeater unit.
