600,599. De-icing aircraft. GAUNT, J. March 26, 1946, No. 9287. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVI] Air, entering at A, is scooped inwards by curved blades and passes at a' to the eye of a centrifugal pump having radial passages aSP3/SP which deliver to two circular assemblies of combustion chambers H within the rotor. The gases are discharged tangentially at T. Power is taken off by a pulley D. Fuel is fed to an inwardly open annular space fSP3/SP from a pipe F controlled by a ball-float valve fSP1/SP and is delivered to burners fSP9/SP. Each of the pump passages a3 has a blow-off valve aSP4/SP. The combustion chambers H and jet nozzles T may be arranged obliquely to the main axis to provide propulsion jets in addition to rotating the pumps. The pumps may have an outward flow stage at the inlet followed by an inward flow stage and the final outward flow stage. The rotor may be provided with freely pivoting aerial propeller blades. Air heated by the exhaust gases may be supplied to the wings for de-icing purposes, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown).
