627,392. Drilling-machines. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., and JOHNSON, A. Sept. 11, 1947, No. 24916. [Class 83 (iii)] A hand lever A or the like is provided on the spindle slide B of a radial-arm drilling machine for the purpose of actuating both mechanism for feeding and unlocking the spindle slide B in relation to the arm C and also an electric switch D controlling a motor E which is capable of rotation in one direction only for actuating the arm-locking mechanism. The lever A is mounted on a shaft ASP2/SP carrying a shoe BSP2/SP for clamping the spindle slide B to a slideway CSP1/SP on the radial arm C which is mounted on a pillar K. A cam ASP3/SP on the shaft ASP2/SP also actuates the switch D through a spring-loaded plunger ASP4/SP and a bell-crank DSP1/SP, DSP2/SP. The motor E is mounted on a box J which is screwed to the arm socket encircling the pillar K, and encloses mechanism comprising pinions, a worm ESP3/SP and worm-wheel ESP4/SP for rotating a shaft ESP5/SP carrying three cams. The centre one of these cams actuates a forked arm ESP8/SP which is pivoted within a hollow lever ESP10/SP provided on a shaft ESP11/SP. The vertical movement of the lever ESP10/SP, the position of which is adjusted by a screw ESP12/SP, is communicated to an endwise-movable stud ESP13/SP carrying a self-aligning pad ESP14/SP which is thereby forced against the pillar K; a similar pad CSP3/SP acts on the opposite side of the pillar K. The other two cams on the sleeve operate bell-cranks L3, M3 controlling switches LSP4/SP, MSP4/SP which are inter-connected with the switch D and a three-way switch F positioned on the slide B for controlling the motor E. When the motor E is set into operation, it will continue to run until one of the switches LSP4/SP, MSP4/SP has been tripped by its cam and at this stage the locking cam will have caused the application of the pad E to the pillar. One setting of the three-way switch renders the motor E inoperative so that movement of the lever A only locks the slide. The second setting renders the motor operable so that movement of the lever A will lock both the arm and the slide, and the third setting operates the motor independently of the hand lever. A signal G to indicate that the arm is locked is provided on the slide. The motor E is so interconnected with the motor for raising and lowering the arm that the latter cannot operate while the arm is locked.
