Class 29 [Also in Group XXVII] In a closed cycle refrigerating engine, operating on the reversed hot gas engine cycle, having at least one hot space and at least one cold space the volumes of which are influenced by piston-like members moving with relative phase difference and comprising means for varying the amount of working medium taking part in a cycle of operations, a piston rod operative to drive one of the piston-like members is provided with an internal duct which permits a periodic communication between the working space of the engine and a second space containing working medium. Hot gas engines are described. In Fig. 1, a working space beneath a piston 3 is connected with an auxiliary space (not shown) by means of a duct 5 in a piston rod 4 and port 6 each time the end of the duct communicates with the port. The working space is connected by a duct (not shown) through a cooler regenerator and heater to a space above a piston in another cylinder, the figure representing, for example, part of a double-acting engine. In a modified engine, Fig. 3, a displacer piston rod 15 slides within a piston 13 and comprises passages 20, 22 and a port of 19. A further passage 18 in the piston 13 serves at a predetermined period of the piston movement to interconnect the port 19 and the passage 22 and thus connect a working space of the engine with an auxiliary space (not shown), the passage 20 communicating with this auxiliary space through a flexible tube. The pressure in the auxiliary space may be varied in known manner. Where rapid control is required the interconnection is established at substantially the highest pressure in the engine. The tube may be connected by means of a distributer cock to spaces of mutually different pressures.
