[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 20, 1946.] [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXVII and XL (c)] Fig. 9 (Cancelled) shows an A.M.F.M. receiver of the signal seeking type (see Group XL (c)) having in addition an A.F.C. arrangement. The receiver comprises an H.F. and converter stage 102, an I.F. amplifier 107, an A.M. detector 108 and a limiter 109 followed by a discriminator, a switch 110 coupled to the wave changer 110a selecting the output to be applied to the audio stage 113. The discriminator comprises two circuits tuned respectively on either side of the carrier and connected to oppositely-arranged diodes. Each circuit produces two D.C. outputs and the corresponding outputs are combined through resistors 133, 134 and 131, 132 to produce in leads 190 and 191 the familiar S-shaped discriminator characteristic, but of opposite polarity in each lead. If search button 163 is momentarily depressed contacts 167, 168 connect +B to the grid of a thyratron 141 through relay coil 145. This relay operates due to the current which now flows in valve 137 and is held when the button is released, by its contacts 146, 147. Thyratron 141 fires and current accordingly flows during positive halfcycles only of the supply through half of winding 153 of a motor 150 and the motor revolves slowly, driving the tuning controls. As a station is approached the voltage on lead 190 rises negatively until it cuts off valve 137 and releases the relay. At the same time the voltage on lead 191 has risen positively to a peak maintaining thyratron 141 conductive, but, as the correct tuning point gets nearer the voltage begins to fall until at the discriminator cross-over point it is zero and the motor stops. Should any overshoot or drift occur the voltage on lead 191 becomes positive, rendering thyratron 142 conductive to drive the motor in the opposite direction. If a particular station is desired one of selector buttons 164-166 is depressed, say button 166, completing the circuit for the left-hand half of the motor winding through the normally-closed contacts 180, 181 at contacts 174, 175. The motor, now operating on both half-cycles of the A.C. supply drives rapidly until a cam 187 which is adjusted approximately to correspond to the desired tuning position opens contacts 180, 181 and allows the tuning to the nearby desired station to be completed under the control of the discriminator as described previously.
