A steel wire shaft A made of solid material or combined strands of steel wire is rigidly clamped at its supports bSP1/SP, bSP2/SP and supports a rotary body C, the parts of the shaft between the body C and the end supports being completely uncovered and free to flex. An initial tension is applied to the shaft by various screw and nut means or wedge means. A lubricant reservoir x, Fig. 3, may be provided within the body C. The unsupported length of the shaft may be increased by forming recesses a in the supports bSP1/SP, bSP2/SP, or similar recesses may be formed in the ends of the bore of the body C. The force of a driving member on the rotary body C is arranged to oppose the weight of the body C and thereby restrict the tension in the shaft A.
