Class 51(ii) In a setting for vertical retort furnaces adapted particularly for use in intermittent vertical chamber ovens having superposed horizontal heating flues 3 formed between the side walls of adjacent vertical chambers 1, the roofs of the flues 3 are formed of bonder bricks 4 arranged side by side in tongue- and-groove engagement with one another and are keyed together by elongated rectangular key blocks 7 let into recesses formed in the abutting edges of two adjacent bonder bricks. Flue gas ports 5 are formed by interposing stretcher bricks 6 forming part of the chamber side walls 2 between bonder bricks 4, and at these ports the ends of the key blocks 7 are keyed into the stretcher bricks. Each key block 7 extends up to the flue surfaces of said walls 2 or alternatively may project slightly into said walls.
