716,385. Jet propulsion plant. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO., Ltd., HALFORD, F. B., and SMITH, J. Nov. 24, 1952 [Dec. 6, 1951], No. 28595/51. Class 110(3) A variable area nozzle for jet propulsion plant comprises a fixed portion A of circular crosssection and a movable portion comprising two or more movable circumferential parts C, CSP1/SP which in their operative position abut along lines at circumferentially-spaced points to constitute a nozzle of circular cross-section, the movable parts lying clear of the gas stream issuing from the fixed portion in the inoperative position. The two semiannular movable parts C. CSP1/SP have brackets CSP2/SP secured thereto, the brackets being pivoted on axes B, BSP1/SP. The two brackets are connected by a link CSP5/SP and the nozzle parts C, CSP1/SP are moved between the operative and inoperative positions by means of hydraulic or pneumatic jacks, the pistons DSP1/SP of which are connected by rods DSP2/SP to brackets CSP6/SP mounted on the movable nozzle parts. The flanges CSP8/SP of the nozzle parts abut in a gas-tight manner and the movable nozzle parts also form a gas-tight seal with the fixed nozzle portion in the operative position. A resilient metal ring F may be secured between the parts FSP1/SP, FSP2/SP secured to the fixed nozzle portion A, the forward portions of the movable nozzle parts C, CSP1/SP engaging, in the operative position, with a portion of the ring F which projects beyond the parts FSP1/SP, FSP2/SP. The outer edge portions of the parts F, FSP1/SP, FSP2/SP are slotted to provide radial resilience. Specifications 591,736, 598,183 and 640,428 are referred to.
