743,829. Selective punching-machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1953 [Nov. 12 1952], No. 30934/53. Class 31 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] A mechanism adapted to pierce record cards 24 while they are in motion comprises a piercing element 48 which is loosely guided for longitudinal and pivotal movement and, after an initial longitudinal movement to pierce the card by means of a member 51 acting upon one end of the element, is caused by the card to be moved pivotally with the latter, abutment means for limiting the pivotal movement of the element in one direction so that normally it is disposed at right-angles to the card, and yieldable means connected to the element for urging it towards the member 51 and abutment means. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the card 24 fed by a reciprocating picker 22 is pierced by the needle punch 48 at a station 2 corresponding to the sensing of a similarly-fed master perforated card 12 by a device 16 at a station 1. The needle punch extends through slots 42, 43, Fig. 2, in an S-shaped support 40 and through a slot 44 in a base plate 38. A spring 46 urges the needle punch upwardly against an insulating strip 49 on the pivoted armature 51 of a magnet 37 and laterally towards the ends of the slots 43, 44 adjacent the feed rollers 27, Fig. 3; these ends of the slots constitute the above-mentioned abutment means. When the magnet 37 is energized, the armature 51 is rocked counterclockwise in Fig. 2 and the insulating strip 49 forces the needle punch downwardly, against the spring 46, until the needle punch pierces the card 24 and extends into a groove 59 in a roller 60. The card 24 is moving to the right in Fig. 3 and carries the end of the needle punch along until, upon the de-energizing of the magnet 37, the armature rocks upwardly and permits the spring 46 to raise the needle punch and return it laterally to its original position. The magnet 37 is de-energized when a contact 57 on the armature 51 strikes a contact 58 on the support 40. The magnet 37 is energized in response to the sensing of holes in the master card 12 by means of a circuit including two thyratrons V1, Fig. 1, and V2, the magnet being connected in the cathode circuit of thyratron V 1. The circuit of thyratron V1 includes a spring element which rocks the sensing device 16 about a stationary pin into engagement with a card 12. Beneath the card 12 is a plate 86 to which a positive high voltage terminal is connected through contacts 88 with which coacts a cam 89 having projections which are adapted to close the contacts 88 as each index point passes under the sensing device 16. The circuit of thyratron V2 includes the armature 51 with its contact 57, and the contact strip 58 which is connected to a positive voltage terminal. When a hole in a card 12 is sensed by the device 16, thyratron V1 is caused to start conducting to energize the magnet 37. Near the bottom of the downward stroke of the needle punch, the armature contact 57 strikes the contact strip 58 so that thyratron V2 is caused to conduct and thyratron V1 to be cut off, thus de-energizing the magnet 37.
