Injurious dust is removed from air by directing a jet of steam, with which may be mixed smoke, into the air and allowing the air to cool, the steam then condensing on the smoke and dust particles so that they are precipitated. The Figure illustrates the application of the invention to a stone crusher wherein stone which is contained in a hopper 5 is fed downwardly through the crusher and through an enclosure 16 on to a conveyer belt 15. A nozzle 8 directs a jet of a steam-smoke mixture downwardly into hopper 5 so that the abrasive dust formed in the crushing operation is carried down into the enclosure 16 and thence through a duct 13 into an enclosure 14 wherein the steam condenses on the smoke and dust particles to cause their precipitation. The steam is generated in a boiler and passes through a pipe 2 to an ejector-mixer 4 wherein it mixes with smoke withdrawn by the ejector through a pipe 4 connected to the boiler chimney. The smoke provides a cloud of hygroscopic particles upon which the steam easily condenses to form a fine mist which envelopes the dust.
