A gear shaving machine comprises a dynamo electric generating machine 11 having a generating winding or conductor system connected electrically in a load circuit, the dynamo being connected to the cutter 8 to produce a braking torque thereon and the torque being controlled by adjustment of the excitation of the dynamo or the load circuit or both. The cutter rotates the D.C. or A.C. dynamo directly or through gearing 18, a shaft 12 and belts 13. The cutter is mounted on a slide 5 adjustable to and from the driven work gear by a hand wheel 10. The slide 5 is mounted on a carriage 1 reciprocated to traverse the cutter across the width of the work. The work may be crowned by increasing the braking torque at each end of the traverse. The torque is controlled by varying the field or the load on the dynamo. This is done by an arm 22a connected to the movable contact of the field rheostat and controlled by a follower 24 moving on a cam 25. A meter in the circuit gives an indication of the pressure exerted by the cutter teeth. The cutter used is slightly undersize and only one side of each tooth is finished at a time.
