A numerical method for determining the conjugate tooth surfaces in gear shaving is presented. The enveloping theory for the gear tooth profile generation process and the coordinate transformation are the basis of this method. The application of the procedure involves the computer aided design of various types of shaving cutters for finishing spur and helical gears with an arbitrary tooth profile. The parametric cubic spline is proposed to interpolate the arbitrary tooth profile. The equations for determining the specifications of the shaving cutter and operating parameters are derived based on the kinematic analysis of skewed-axes, tight-meshed helical gears. The tooth modification of shaving cutters for different shaving methods and effects of design parameters upon the tooth modification are analyzed. The surface characteristics of plunge shaving cutter including the normal curvature and sliding ratios are examined.; Analysis results for shaving cutter bending stress and tooth deflection are presented for a variety of loading conditions, relief hole diameters, and root geometry by using finite element methods. The possibility of using finite element techniques for three-dimensional meshing contact between the shaving cutter tooth and gear tooth is discussed.
