Improvements in or relating to railway sleeper provided with removable devices for shouldering the rails laterally and shoulder devices intended for such sleepers
739,432. Railway permanent way. COMPAGNIE INTERNATIONALE DES PIEUX ARMES FRANKIGNOUL SOC. ANON. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 14, 1953], No. 4245/54. Class 104 (2). Each railway rail is mounted in a shallow recess 3 across the sleeper 1 and any thrust against the side walls of the recess 3 is distributed by vertical plate-like members 5, 6, provided at each wall of the recess 3, rigidly connected and spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the rail foot; the plate-like members are held against movement longitudinally of the rail. The vertical plates 5, 6 may be formed by one of the flanges of angle sections the horizontal flanges of which sections are accommodated in grooves in the face of the recess 3 or, as shown in Fig. 12, by strips resting on the face of or, Fig. 15 (not shown), in grooves in the faces of the recess 3. The plates 5, 6 are joined by members 15 downwardly turned so as to engage the sloping sides of the sleeper 1 or alternatively by angle pieces or strips to prevent movement in the axial direction of the track. In a further modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the ends of the plates are downwardly turned so as to engage the sloping sides of the sleeper 1. Webs may also be provided on the base-portion of the angle sections to engage notches in the face of the recess 3. A resilient pad is usually inserted between the rail 4 and the sleeper 1 and grooves 8, Fig. 6, in the face of the recess 3 at an angle to or parallel with the rail axis prevent movement of the pad 7. The pad 7 may be provided with heel portions 23, Fig. 16, or with ribs or nubs which bear on the horizontal flanges when such flanges are disposed below the level of the face of the recess 3. The plates 5, 6 may be of a different thickness and by arranging the thicker plate on the inside or outside of the pack the rail gauge can be varied. The rail 4 is held in position by clamps 16 or 17 the outer lugs of which engage a support member 20 contained in a recess or merely the recess 21 formed in the sleeper 1. Rotation of the clamps 16, 17 is prevented by the recess 21 or member 20 or by extending the plates 5, 6 above the height of the rail foot. The device may be used with reinforced concrete, wooden sleepers or sleepers of any other material.
