In the shaped detergent compositions of the parent Specification, a part or the whole of the ester of orthophosphoric acid or salt of such ester is replaced by a phosphonic acid containing a hydrocarbon radical having at least 4 carbon atoms linked directly to the phosphorus atom of the phosphonic acid, or by a partial ester of such a phosphonic acid or by a compound in which a phosphonic acid complete ester group and a phosphonic acid partial ester group are linked at their phosphorus atoms by a polymethylene group, said phosphonic acid or derivative being preferably in the form of an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt. The hydrocarbon radical may be alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkyl-aryl or cycloaliphatic and may carry substituents such as amino, alkylamino, amido, nitro, alkyl or hydroxyalkyl groups or halogen atoms. The hydrocarbon radical of the partial ester may be similar to that of the phosphonic acid. The compositions may also contain soaps, sulphonated soap-forming fatty acids, synthetic detergents such as ethylene oxide condensation products sodium chloride, sodium silicate, aluminium silicates, urea-formaldehyde condensation products, polyvinyl alcohol, alginates, sodium methacrylate, inorganic phosphates, wool fat products and lethicin. It is advantageous to adjust the pH value of the compositions to a neutral or slightly acid reaction. In the first example, to a mixture of 15 per cent of coconut oil fatty acids, 60 of lard oil fatty acids and 5 of oleic acid is added 20 per cent of a surface-active phosphonic acid derivative of the formula C17 H35 CO. NH. C6H4. PO. (OH)2, obtained by reacting 1 mol. of stearyl chloride with 1 mol. of amino-phenyl phosphonic acid, and the mixture is neutralized with caustic soda. In the second example 25 parts of octadecyl dihydrogen orthophosphate, 25 parts of octadecyl tetraglycol dihydrogen, orthophosphate and 40 parts of the sodium salt of the phosphonic acid derivative of example 1 are mixed with the addition of 10 parts of water, adjusted to pH 6 to 6.5 and compressed into bars.
