A substance present in a liquid is removed by contacting the liquid with an immiscible absorptive liquid of different density by discharging the first liquid into the upper portion of an introduction chamber, discharging the second liquid through a separate inlet thereinto, passing both liquids therefrom into a second chamber where the liquid of lesser density flows through the other liquid permitting the substance in the one liquid to be absorbed by the other liquid whereafter the lighter liquid passes away through an upper outlet while the heavier one flows to a settling chamber for final removal. Naphthalene laden gas enters a tower 1 at 2 and rises past baffles 3 to an outlet 5, encountering on its way water sprayed downwards from nozzles 4. The water extracts the naphthalene from the gas and the charged water descends on to a vented cone 9 closing the top of a cylindrical wall 8. On the cone it mixes with tar from an inlet 6, the tar filling and overflowing a weir 13 formed with a serrated upper edge 14. The associated liquids flow down an annular chamber 10 between the wall 8 and the tower 1 and the chamber introduces them, through openings 16, into the bottom of an inner or second chamber 12. Here they rise in an annular space 12SP1/SP between the wall 8 and a cylindrical wall 17 and are brought into intimate contact by baffles 21, the tar removing the naphthalene from the water and sinking to the bottom of the space where it builds up until it overflows an adjustable weir 23 into a heated settling chamber 20 formed by the cylindrical wall 17. The water, free -from naphthalene, rises in the chamber 12 to an outlet 22 while the tar escapes through an outlet 19 in the conical bottom 18 of the chamber 20 at a rate determined by a valve 29 actuated by an automatic control 30 dependent upon the difference of pressure between two points 31, 32 in the chamber 12 and the settling chamber 20 respectively.
