Apparatus for contacting a gas and a liquid or two immiscible liquids of different density has a series of superposed trays in a column, each tray having a liquid downcomer as shown and openings 38 for the upward passage of the lighter fluid, some of the openings being provided with valves 30 which are opened by the pressure of the lighter fluid below the tray and the number of openings with valves being such that when the valves are fully opened between 15 and 60% preferably between 30 and 50% of the lighter fluid passes through the openings without valves. The valves are of the type described in Specification 803,711, and the valved and unvalved openings are preferably arranged in a geometric pattern to secure even distribution of the lighter fluid over the entire tray. Thus, e.g. the valved and unvalved openings may alternate in parallel rows or there may be alternate parallel rows of valved and unvalved openings.
