A ventilating diffuser comprises a cylindrical casing 10 having a lower flange 14 connected by bolts 18 and distance pieces 17 to an upper flange 15 of a truncated conical outlet 16, and a solenoid 13 which is supported by a spider within the casing and has an armature shaft 19 which supports, by means of a spider 20, a cylindrical baffle 21 for controlling the lateral air outlet between the flanges 14, 15. A double conical baffle 24, 25, connected to the lower end of the shaft 19, controls the air outlet from the member 16. The solenoid is periodically energized, by means of a time switch, to change the direction of air flow from the downward and lateral outlets, the amount of air flowing from the diffuser remaining constant. The electromagnet may be replaced by a hydraulic or pneumatic device.
