A diverging belt sorter uses V-belts 7, 8 with sorbo faces 11 inwardly inclined as shown. The separation of the pulleys 5, 6 and guide rails 12 is adjustable at the input and ouput of the sorter. The shaft 4 at the output end is adjustable lengthwise of the sorter to take up slack in the belts. The pulleys are journalled on sleeves on the shaft, and the sleeve 28 slides along the shaft to alter the spacing between the pulleys. The spacing is determined by a spring-loaded nut and screw adjustment 33 . . 35 between a bracket 32 mounted on the shaft and a bracket 31 mounted on the sleeve 28 and supporting the guide rail 12. A similar adjustment is provided at the input end, the drive being communicated to the " moving " pulley by pins extending through holes in the drive pulley.
