[Also in Group XL (b). A gate or rectifier circuit for electric pulsesignal-handling devices, e.g. electronic digital computers or telegraphic signalling apparatus, comprises the combination of a magnetic device having a core T with at least input and output windings A and B and a third winding C, and a D.C. biasing source connected to the third winding. In a gate, the direct current supplied to C has two possible values applying magnetizing force to the core corresponding to points p and r respectively on B/H curve, Fig. 2. For the first value (point p), a pulse at winding A, Fig. 1, produces no output at winding B, whereas for the second value (point r) such an output will be produced by an input pulse of one polarity For transmitting pulses of either polarity two devices in which the windings C are connected in opposite senses may be combined (Fig. 3, not shown). A rectifier may comprise the device shown in Fig. 1, with a direct current corresponding to point r supplied continuously to C. Alternatively, in a combined rectifier/gate, the .winding C is given a current corresponding to point p and a fourth winding is supplied with gate-opening pulses which move the working point to r. The gates and rectifiers may be employed in the shift registers of Specification 761,121.
