An overhead valve is operated by an eccentric 12 through a connecting rod 13 and valve rocker 16, which rocker contacts the valve stem 8, or a guide plunger 9 thereon, through cam surfaces 18 arranged so that the rocker undergoes a combined sliding and rolling motion on the stem 8 or plunger 9 during valve operation the valve operating gear being enclosed within an oiltight casing 20. The surfaces 18 may be concave or convex or one surface may be flat and the other concave or convex. A spring 19 acts on the rocker 16 to maintain it in contact with the end of the connecting rod 13. The rocker pivot 17 may be mounted in an eccentric which may be adjusted manually or by a governor to vary the clearance between the rocker and valve stem and hence vary the valve timing.
