764,388. Accelerometers. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1955 [March 8, 1954], No. 5899/55. Class 106 (3). An accelerometer comprises a mass 14 suspended elastically, e.g. by springs 15, 16 in a frame 12, 13, 62, the oscillations of the mass being damped by two relatively slidable parts, one secured to the frame and the other to the mass, which define a variable-volume air chamber. As shown, the part secured to the frame comprises a piston 26 and the part secured to the mass is a cylinder 37 preferably arranged within the hollow centre of the mass so that the piston and cylinder also serve toguide the mass in its oscillation. The mass is prevented from rotation relative to the frame by a roller 61 mounted for free rotation on the mass and running on a track 63 in the frame member 62. The air confined in the chamber between the bottom face of the piston and the opposing cylinder wall is allowed to leak via an aperture whose dimensions are regulated by an adjusting screw. Movement of the mass 14 is communicated to a lever arm 58 by means of a stud 59 secured to the mass on a ball-bearing 57 and thence to an indicating pointer. The meter is enclosed in a sealed casing.
