A rubbery copolymer is prepared by aqueous emulsion polymerization of a mixture which includes a conjugated diene hydrocarbon, a vinyl aromatic monomer, preferably styrene, and a vinylpyridine monomer, the latter being from 0.1 per cent to 3 per cent of the total. The diene hydrocarbon may be butadiene, isoprene, 2,3 - dimethyl - 1,3 - butadiene or 2 - ethyl - 1,3-butadiene; the vinylpyridine may be 2-, 3- or 4-vinyl pyridine or 2-methyl-5-vinyl-, 5-ethyl-2-vinyl-, 2-methyl-6-vinyl- or 2-ethyl-4-vinyl-pyridine. The polymerization mixture may include potassium oleate or sodium resinate as emulsifying agent, a chain terminating agent such as dodecyl or tertiary butyl mercaptan, a catalyst such as hydrogen or benzoyl peroxide, ammonium or potassium persulphate or sodium perborate, and the polymerization may be terminated by the addition of a short stop agent such as di-tertiary butyl hydroquinone, dinitrochlorobenzene and sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate, with which may be added an antioxidant such as phenyl betanaphthylamine. The latex formed may be mixed with an aqueous solution of an A-stage resorcinol-formaldehyde resin or a solution of ingredients that will form the resin, e.g. resorcinol, formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide, to form an adhesive suitable for bonding reinforcing cords to rubber.
