Class 99(2) [Also in Group XVIII] In a metal pipe 10 provided with cathodic protection, a deflector 20 is mounted in the pipe and upstream of an electrode 14 and is shaped to cause solid particles in the liquid flowing in the pipe to be propelled out of the path of the liquid reaching the electrode. As shown, the pipe is provided with axially spaced bosses 11, 12 the electrode 14 having an enlarged part 15 screwed into the boss 11 and being held against displacement by a nut 16 and a packing ring 17, and, the deflector 20 of aerofoil cross-section being screwed into the boss 12; the deflector is formed with a flange 22- which seats on a packing ring 23. In a modification, the pipe is provided with an opening closed by a plate 30, Fig. 4, to which is bolted'a ring 32 carrying four radial arms 33 which are of aerofoil cross-section and arranged so as to impart to the liquid a rotary motion whereby solid particles in the liquid are projected outwardly by centrifugal action and away from the electrode. The deflectors may be made of steel, silicon iron, an alloy metal or ceramic, and' covered with an abrasive-resistant coating such as hard rubber or a plastic.
