777,709. Discharge devices. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 30, 1953 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 33238/53. Class 39(1). An electric discharge device, particularly one incorporating a dual space charge modulation and velocity modulation means, as described in Specification 756,236, having a pair of vertically stacked tubular insulators 5, preferably ceramic, and a disc-shaped tungsten grid electrode 2 positioned therebetween has a combined seal and electrode terminal 9 comprising a metallic annular member 11 positioned around the junction of the insulators 5 and electrode disc 2, the annular having a vertical wall spaced from the peripheral surface of the assembly and a bottom wall extending inwardly to engage the lower insulator and provide a solder trough. A body of soft solder 13 in the trough provides both a hermetic bond between the insulators 5 and a conductive connection between the electrode 2 and the annular member 11. The portion of the lower insulator adjacent the junction of the insulators can be recessed by cutting down or rabetting to provide an external shoulder 12 thereon, inwardly extending portion of the annular member 11 being supported on the shoulder. The inside upper edge of the member 11 is preferably bevelled. Before melting the solder the preferably ceramic surfaces of the insulating members 5 are metallized or sprayed or otherwise coated with a flux or wetting agent such as titanium hydride preferably as described in Specifications 16201/49 and 16458/49 as open to public inspection under Sec. 91 of the Patents and Designs Acts, 1907-1946. A coaxial line resonator 6 comprises a hollow tubular conductor 7 having spring fingers 8 engaging the electrode sea]-terminal 9 and the electrode-seal terminal 10 having a radial conductive extension.
