A flux forming part of an arc welding electrode (see Group XXII) contains a deoxidizer and a prefused slag-forming material but no gas or gas-forming materials. A flux for use in welding semikilled steel is formed of a base mixture of 20 parts sodium silicate, 50 parts rutile and 4 parts manganese oxide which is fused and pulverized. 80 parts of the base mixture are mixed with 40 parts prefused silicon and 30 parts prefused ferro-manganese to produce the flux. Other materials that may be used are ferro-silicon, ferro-titanium, silicon oxide and potassium silicate.
