814,732. Ironing. FOSTER & CO. Ltd., R. S. Sept. 7, 1955 [Sept. 20, 1954; July 13, 1955], No. 25679/55. Class 138 (2). A device for use in pressing pleats in skirts comprises a horizontally disposed supporting arm 7 (Figs. 1, 2), means for securing the arm 7 to the table 2, bench or pedestal of a steam pressing machine, and an elongated and horizontally disposed member 9 with which a skirt 19 can be engaged so that the member 9 defines a line along which a pleat is to be pressed, the member 9 being hinged about a horizontal axis to the arm 7 so that when the arm 7 is secured to the table 2 the member 9 can be swung downwardly into and upwardly out of the space existing between the pads 1, 3 of the machine when the top pad 3 is raised. In one example, Figs. 1, 2, the elongated member 9 comprises a blade e.g. of thin strip metal which may be perforated and is secured within a slot formed in the upper edge of an elongated board 10 of plywood pivotally secured within a clip 11 on a pivot pin 12. A wing nut 15 and bolt 13 passing through an arcuate slot 14 in the board 10 hold the board 10 and blade 9 in adjusted position. The clip 11 is fixed to a tube 16 which acts as a hinge pin for the clip 11 by being rotatably mounted within the arm 7 which has a downwardly bent portion 7a slidably and rotatably mounted in a socket tube 6. The arm 7 is held in adjusted position by means of a thumb screw 8 in the tube 6 which is secured to a clamp 4. Fig. 2 shows the blade 9, in full lines, in position to receive a skirt for pressing and, in dotted lines, in the horizontal pressing position. In a second example, Fig. 7, the elongated member comprises a length of wire 26 extending between the arms 27a, 27b of a U-shaped tubular metal frame having a base portion 27 and a reinforcing member 28. The frame is rockably mounted on a U-shaped clip 36 by means of a pivot pin 37 passing through the member 28, the frame being held in its adjusted position by means of a bolt and wing nut 39. The clip 36 is secured to a tube 40 mounted for limited rotation in a tubular arm 24 having a downwardly bent portion 24a engaged over a spigot 23 secured to a clamp 21. One end of the wire 26 is removably engaged over a hook bolt 29 having a wing nut 30 for adjusting the tension in the wire 26. A length of closely wound coiled wire spring (Fig. 8, not shown) extends parallel with and close to one side of the tubular member 28 and is used to hold the skirt in place. One end of this spring is anchored to a pin projecting from the arm 27a, while the other end is fitted with a hook detachably engaged over a pin projecting from the arm 27b. In a modification (Fig. 13, not shown) the spigot 23 is slidably mounted on the clamp 21 instead of being fixedly secured thereto.
