Improvements relating to metallisable polyazo dyestuffs derived from 1-amino-8-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid, complex copper compounds thereof, and their use

The invention comprises dyes of formula: FORM:0840898/IV (c)/1 where R is an alkyl, benzene or acyl residue bound directly to the amino group via the (C=0)-group, X is a metallisable substituent and A is the residue of a naphthol sulphonic acid coupled #s to the OH group and copper complexes thereof. They may be made by coupling approppriate tetrazotised 4, 41-diaminodiphenyls with the necessary naphthol sulphonic acids with coppering if desired. Coppering may be effected in substance or on the fibre. Specified as metallisable groups are carboxy, hydroxy, p carboxymethoxy and methoxy, the latter being preferred. R is preferably an acyl group specified being acetyl, chloro-, methoxy- and phenoxy-acetyl, benzoyl, chlor-and alkyl-benzoyl and carbomethony and -ethoxy groups. Specified for A, which may be the same as the other naphthol component, are 1-naphthol-3- and -4- mono-, -3, 6-, -3, 8- and -4, 8- di- and -3, 6, 8-tri-sulphonic acids, 2-naphthol-6- mono- and -3, 6- and -6, 8-disulphonic acids, 1, 8-dihydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- and 1- naphthol -8- chloro- and -ethoxy -3, 6- disulphonic acids, N-acetyl-, -benzoyl- and -phenylderivatives of 1- amino -8- naphthol-3, 6- and -4, 6- di-, 1- or 2- amino -5- naphthol -7-, 2- amino -6- naphthol -8- and 2- amino -8- naphthol -6- mono-sulphonic acids. Amino-naphthol-sulphonic acids containing arylazo substituents may also be used. Dyes containing 3 sulphonic acid groups are preferred because of their water-solubility. Cellulosic fibres are dyed by the metal-free dyes in blue shades which may be fixed by an after coppering process. The copper complexes dye cellulose material in reddish to greenish-blue shades. In examples which illustrate the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing processes the reactants used are chosen from those indicated above additional values for R being b , b -dimethyl-acrylyl-, propionyl- and b -ethoxycarboethoxy-amino and methyl-, ethyl-, b -hydroxyethyl, phenyl- and 4-methoxyphenyl and for A are 2-(31-sulphophenylamino)-5-naphthol-7 and -8-naphthol -6- sulphonic acids and salicylic acid, 2-amino -5-nitrobenzene- and 5-amino -2- hydroxybenzene -1- carboxylic acids and aniline --2-amino -5- naphthol -7- sulphonic acid.
