Photographic silver images are stabilized (i.e. fixed, but not washed) in the presence of, or the stabilized image is treated with, a thiol compound of the general formula wherein X represents a vinylene or substituted vinylene group, a -CRSP1/SP=N- group (RSP1/SP being H, alkyl or carboxyalkyl) or a sulphur or oxygen atom, Y and Z are hydrogen atoms or monovalent substituents or together complete a benzene ring which may carry substituents, and R is hydrogen or an alkyl group. The thiol compound may be added to the silver halide emulsion or to the developer or fixer, or it may be used in a separate bath. The fixer may be an alkali metal or ammonium thiocyanate, an alkali metal or ammonium thiosulphate, a thiourea or a thioglycollic acid.
