A device which prevents breakages, controls the balloon, prevents the yarn collapsing and eliminates stubs and fluff as the yarn is drawn off at high speed in textile machines where the bobbins (particularly cross-wound bobbins in slanting layers) are separated by partitions, and which results in a winding which is not too dense for dyeing &c., comprises an abutment member having a linear yarn-contacting edge portion arranged to conform substantially to the general outline of the surface of revolution formed by a yarn package on a bobbin before unreeling and to be, for its main portion, substantially parallel to the bobbin axis, said abutment member being attached to one of said partitions. The abutment member may be of wire, Fig. 1, or a plate secured to a partition 14, and shaped to conform with the outline of the package and arranged in a plane through the bobbin-axis, the upper part 12 constituting an auxiliary abutment member. The plate may be replaced by a member of V-section providing a thread-contacting edge, or it may take the form shown in Fig. 4 where the auxiliary member 25 is separately provided in the same plane as the main member and shaped to conform to the conical upper part of the package. In another form two such auxiliary members are provided with a thread guide between them, one member being above the main member. The edges of the members may be rounded or sharp and the positions of the abutment members may be adjustable.
