The invention comprises 4,4-dimethyl-19-nor-androstan-17b -ol-3-one, 4,4-dimethyl-19-nor-D 5-androsten-17b -ol-3-one, their 17-acylates, their 17a -alkyl derivatives and their preparation by reacting 19-nor-D 4-androsten-17b -ol-3-one or a 17a -lower alkyd derivative with methyl iodide in a tertiary alcohol in the presence of potassium t-butoxide, and if desired catalytically hydrogenating the D 5-4,4-dimethyl derivative produced to yield the androstane analogue. Examples detail the preparation of 4,4-dimethyl-19-nor-D 5-androsten-17b -ol-3-one, its androstane analogue, their acetates, propionates, benzoates and cyclopentylpropionates, their 17a -methyl derivatives, and also the 17a -ethyl and 17a -propyl derivatives of the D 5-androstene compound.
