Copolymers, soluble in methylene chloride and dioxane, and suitable for the manufacture of lacquers, moulded articles or photographic film bases (see Group XX) are made by reacting (a) a low molecular weight polyester of a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol containing 2-10 carbon atoms with (b) a polycarbonate of a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane or the ingredients necessary to produce such a polycarbonate. In examples, a low molecular weight polyethylene terephthalate, polytrimethylene terephthalate, polyethylene isophthalate, polyethylene adipate or polytrimethylene adipate was reacted with diphenyl carbonate and bis-phenol A or a polycarbonate obtained therefrom using as a catalyst either zinc oxide or a mixture of zinc oxide and lead oxide. Other di-(monohydroxaryl) alkanes mentioned are the 4:41-dihydroxy diphenyl derivatives of methane, ethane and butane. Other dicarboxylic acids specified are sebacic acid and mixtures of isophthalic and terephthalic acids. According to the Provisional Specification (1) the copolymers may be made by reacting simultaneously ingredients necessary for the production of the polyester and the polycarbonate, e.g. by reacting a mixture of dimethyl terephthalate, bis-phenol A, the acetate of bis-phenol A and diphenyl carbonate or by reacting a mixture of dimethyl terephthalate, cyclic ethylene carbonate, bis-phenol A and diphenyl carbonate and (2) the alkane group in the di-(monohydroxy aryl) alkanes may be replaced by a sulphone, ether, carbonyl, sulphide or sulphoxide group.
