Hydrocarbon fractions boiling above 150 DEG C., e.g. a petroleum fraction or a distillate fraction boiling within the range 150-450 DEG C. and which may contain sulphur, are contacted with a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal or a refractory oxide support in the presence of hydrogen and added halogen at a temperature of at least 600 DEG F. and a pressure of at least 100 p.s.i.g., the temperature and space velocity used being so correlated to give a product boiling above 150 DEG C. having a pour point at least 5 DEG F. lower than the pour point of the feedstock. The halogen, e.g. F, Cl, or Br, may be introduced either as such or as a compound which is decomposable to halogen under the reaction conditions, such as compounds with carbon, oxygen or hydrogen, e.g. hydrogen halides or halogen derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons having 1-4 carbon atoms. The halogen material may be injected directly into the reaction zone, or introduced with the hydrogen or the feedstock. The catalyst is preferably platinum or palladium. The refractory oxide support may be selected from one or more of the oxides of metals of Groups II, III and IV of the Periodic Table, preferably alumine. It may also include compounds of non-metallic elements of Groups III, IV and V, e.g. boron or phosphorus, for example in combination with the aforesaid metals, preferably in an amount of 5-25% wt.
