In a variable ratio trans. former arrangement of known type, feeding a load L 1 through serially - connected oppositely variable inductances L 2 , L 3 , associated with a common core 9 connected across one part n 3 of the transformer secondary winding n 2 , n 3 , to reduce the effective variation of inductance of the arrangement, an additional inductance Lk is connected across the inductance L 3 . By this means, as the load current through inductance L 1 is reduced, the current through Lk is increased, the two effects placing substantially constant load on the transformer. The inductance of Lk may be arranged to vary with the position of the core 9, which may be of ferromagnetic material and which may have high conductive metal elements at its ends. The load and supply connections may be interchanged so that the arrangement works into the primary winding of the transformer.
