Oxidation catalysts are obtained by treating TiO2 (preferably of anastase structure) with an aqueous solution or suspension of a vanadium complex compound and phosphomolybdic acid or its ammonium salt, thickening the mixture to a dough-like and kneadable mass, shaping preferably to bodies of 2-10 mm. diameter, drying and finally activating at 170-400 DEG C. in a current of air, preferably moist. ALSO: Maleic acid and anhydride are produced by catalytic oxidation of benzene in the vapour phase, below 400 DEG C. by use of a novel catalyst obtained by treating TiO2 (preferably of anastase structure) with an aqueous solution or suspension of a vanadium complex compound and phosphomolybdic acid or its ammonium salt, thickening the mixture to a dough-like and kneadable mass, shaping preferably to bodies of 2mm-10mm diameter, drying and finally activating at 170 DEG C.-400 DEG C. in a current of air, preferably moist.
