Cigarettes from a cigarette making machine are transferred by a catcher band to the upper surface of endless conveyer 4 and fall between the partitions 5 thereof so as to be transferred to the left. They then fall over the end of the conveyer and are moved as shown to the right along a band 15 till they fall down shoot 11 into a compartment formed by one of the partitions 20 20 of endless belt conveyer 6. Each compartment is filled by the cigarettes and is then discharged down shoot 21 towards a packing machine. The compartments formed by the partitions 20 of belt 6 form a reservoir R the capacity of which may be varied by varying the position of shoot 11. Thus shoot 11 is carried by said band 15, an aperture in which band forms the inlet 12 for filling the compartments, so that band 15 constitutes both the inlet and the shoot 11, and is wound at each end upon a spring drum so that by movement of the band the position of shoot 11 and inlet 12 is varied to vary the capacity of the reservoir.
