Phenol sulfide nickel amine derivatives as light stabilizers

The invention comprises nickel amine complexes of bis (2-hydroxy-5-alkylphenyl) sulphides and a process for preparing them by reacting the corresponding nickel complex with ammonia or an organic amine in an inert volatile organic solvent medium at an elevated temperature. In examples, the alkyl group is t-octyl and the amine is ammonia, n-dodecylamine, aniline, morpholine, hexamethyleneimine, n-propylamine, n-butylamine or s-amylamine. Other alkyl groups suggested are ethyl, butyl, amyl, nonyl, t-dodecyl, oetadecyl and cyclodecyl; further amine reactants listed are methylamine, ethylamine, laurylamine, octylamine, octadecylamine, anisidine toluidine, 1- and 2-naphthylamines, p-dodecylaniline, p-butylaniline, xylidene, p-octyloxyaniline, piperazine and piperidine.ALSO:Polyolefins especially polyethylene and polypropylene, are stabilised against deterioration by ultraviolet radiation by the presence of 0.01-5% of a nickel amine complex of a bis- (2-hydroxy-5-alkylphenyl) sulphide (see Division C2).
