A stock-gripping device for drawn sections comprises two opposed grippers, each consisting of a plurality of relatively thin adjacent blades which are pivotably mounted, the free ends of the blades catching on different points on the section of the material to be drawn and the blades being disengaged at the end of the drawing operation by a linkage. The device comprises two plates 7 supporting horizontal spindles 4 and 5 on each of which are mounted a plurality of blades 1, 2. The upper blades 1 fall by gravity so that their pointed free ends 3 engage the material to be drawn, the lower blades have counter-weights 6 which lift the ends 3 of the blades 2. The blades are opened at the end of the drawing operation by a linkage comprising a lever 14 pivoted at 15, a link 8 carrying an abutment 10 and sliding in a groove 12 and a similar link 9, carrying an abutment 11 and sliding in a groove 13. In a modification, the spindles 4 and 5 are mounted vertically and the blades are spring-pressed to the closed position.
