961,613. Rotary air pumps. LACY-HULBERT & CO. Ltd. Feb. 22, 1963 [Feb. 1, 1962], No. 3902/62. Heading F1F. A vane-type rotary air pump is characterised by means located within the rotor whereby a force is applied directly to at least one of the major faces of each of the vanes pressing them against the side of their guide slots. As shown at A, the force may be derived from a spring 3 pressing on a vane 1 through a roller 2. Alternatively a leaf spring 9 may be used with a split vane as shown at C. The force may be obtainedby a roller 6 located in a wedge shaped recess so that on rotation of the rotor the roller presses against the side of vane 5. A final modification illustrated at D, shows a bore 11 drilled from the base of the guide slot of the preceding vane 12 to the leading face of the guide slot of the vane 10. As vane 12 approaches top dead centre, it is forced down its guide slot and causes a built up of oil pressure in bore 11 which is applied to the leading face of vane 10.
