In a system for shearing a long strip of material as it is produced (e.g. from a rolling mill) into standard short lengths (e.g. 185 ft.) means are provided to ensure that the remaining material at the end of the long strip is not less than a certain minimum length (e.g. 75 ft.). These means comprise a strip detector 14, Fig. 1, in the path of the strip before it reaches the shears 16, a survey counter 21 which, under the control of the detector 14, determines what the remaining length of strip would be if as many complete standard lengths as possible were cut from the strip, and a master counter 22 which controls the shears 16 and which, if the computed remaining length of strip is less than the minimum length (= 75 ft.), causes a length of strip (e.g.= 100 ft.) intermediate between the minimum length (= 75 ft.) and the standard length (= 185 ft.) to be cut off whereby the remainder, which would have been less than the minimum length is increased (by 85 ft.) sufficiently to ensure that it is larger than the minimum. The capacity of the survey counter 21 is set, 24, 26, to correspond to the standard length and it counts pulses from a device 28, while strip is passing the detector 14. A further count 25, 27 can also be set in the survey counter corresponding to the minimum length (= 75 ft.) and if when the end of the strip passes the detector 14 this minimum count has not been exceeded a signal is passed to the master counter 22. The master counter is also set to a capacity corresponding to the standard length and is controlled by a strip detector 18 adjacent to the shears. A further count 32, 35 corresponding to the intermediate length, can be set in the master counter and when the survey counter indicates that the remainder will be less than the minimum length the master counter causes a length equal to this intermediate length to be cut off. A third count, 33, 36, can also be set into the master counter to compensate, at the beginning of each new long strip, for the distance between the detector 18 and the shear.
