Centrifugal self-cleaning snagger for strand take-up mechanism

In the continuous and successive winding of thread or the like on to coaxially mounted reels 10, 11 the opposed flange of the reels are each provided with a snagger plate 14 having snagging members 29, as shown in Fig. 2, pivotally mounted thereon in such manner that the outer tips 34 of the members 29 are movable axially of the plate or reel at a predetermined minimum speed of rotation to their operative snagging position and away therefrom when the speed falls below this value. Improved self-cleaning characteristics are claimed for this arrangement. The snagger plate 14 comprises a plate 17 having L-shaped members 29 pivotally mounted thereon by means of pins 33. When stationary the members 29 are urged to the position shown dotted by spring-loaded plungers 38 whereas in operation above a certain predetermined minimum rotational speed the outer tips 34 of the members 29 are held under centrifugal force in contact with a rim 36 of the plate 17. A peripheral flange 41 is provided on the plate 17 to prevent thread entering the space between the plate and the end flange 28 of the reel. In the arrangement shown the reel 10 is mounted for easy replacement on an arbor 25 and pintle 24, drive to the reel being transmitted from the snagger plate by ring members 26 and 27.
