In a method of decorating porcelain, earthenware, majolica ware and the like, an aqueous glaze, after laying on, is set by means of a fixative, e.g. a solution of polyvinyl acetate, and a ceramic decal transferred thereon without an intermediate glaze baking step. The ceramic decals are prepared by printing on to decal paper a suspension of powdered vitrifiable pigments in a suitable pigment-vehicle, drying the prints and then coating with a varnish. Compositions of a suitable pigment vehicle and a varnish, both of which include polyvinyl acetate, are given.
