912,174. Linking chairs in rows; nesting. STAFFORD PATENTS & HOLDINGS Ltd. May 5, 1960 [May 7, 1959; Jan. 11, 1960; Jan. 26, 1960], Nos. 15746/59, 1020/60 and 2843/60. Class 52 (2). An underframe for a linkable nesting unit comprises two end pairs of mutually downwardly divergent front and rear legs, a transverse element 10 rigid with and extending between the upper parts of the first end pair 4, 6 so as to form an open-bottomed end frame, and connecting means 8, 9 between the end pairs of legs 4, 6, 5, 7 holding them in longitudinally spaced relationship, the connecting means 8, 9 at least where connected to the second end pair 5, 7, being disposed downwardly from the upper parts thereof. As shown in Fig. 1, the legs 5, 7 are more widely spaced than the legs 4, 6 so that the pair of legs 4, 6 can nest within the pair 5, 7. Transverse elements 10, 11 are provided on each pair of legs. To link two units 1 together the transverse elements 10, 11 are engaged one behind the other as viewed from an end of a row of underframes. Means such as cross-bars 12, 13 are provided to prevent the units being telescoped together. The unit 1 can form part of an arm-chair, Fig. 6, or a desk, Fig. 14 (not shown). In a modification shown in Fig. 11, upper parts of the end frames carrying the transverse elements 10a, 11a are bent outwardly with respect to the planes containing the lower parts of such end frames. In a further modification shown in Fig. 28, the linking end pairs of legs of successive frames are in a common plane, the interlinking being provided by forming the transverse element 11e of the wider pair of legs 5e, 7e with a channel 33 to receive the transverse element 10e of the interlinking pair of legs 4e, 6e of the next underframe. In the modification shown in Fig. 36, the spacing of the front and rear legs of each end pair of legs of the underframe is the same. The connecting members 8h, 9h first diverge for a short distance from the end pair of legs associated with the transverse element 11h and then gradually converge towards one another to a short distance from the other end pair of legs when they again diverge to the positions at which they are secured to the lastmentioned legs. This enables successive underframes to be linked together with the transverse element 10h of the one underframe behind the transverse element 11h of the adjoining end-toend underframe.
