Rolls for producing ribbed wire suitable for use as reinforcing wire form a centre pass which is substantially closed, at least part of the concave contour of each roll being an arc of a circle whose radius is in a ratio of at least 1À04 : 1 with the diameter of the wire to be rolled. Three profiled rolls 6, 6a and 6b may suitably be employed, the rolls being freely rotatable or driven and being radially and axially adjustable. Part of each roll profile may be flat or formed by an elliptical line and ribs of longitudinal or helical form may be provided. Six rolls may form a pass, and a number of rolling head may be mounted in series. If desired, the rolls may be skewed.
