980,486. Welts &c. butting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. March 14, 1961 [March 15, 1960], No. 9204/61. Addition to 811,605. Heading A3B. [Also in Divisions D1 and H2] In a sewing machine adapted to sew together a shoe upper, an insole and a welt, the latter is severed by means operated when an electro-magnetic device is energized via switch means which are rendered effective by means associated with a stitch setting device. The machine is similar to that described in the parent Specification. When the welt is to be sewn around the shoe with the ends abutting, a selector switch is set with an element 144 engaging a contact SS, and the feeler 12 engages the front end of the welt to close a switch 28 which is not, as in the parent case, in the circuit of the solenoid 20 operating the knife 14, but in a second circuit which includes a relay K3 having normally open contacts K3B in the circuit of solenoid 20. The control circuits are supplied via a switch LS1 which is closed while the machine is running, and a switch LS2 which is closed by a treadle 94 when the latter is depressed to start the machine. A few stitches before severing is to occur, a knee pad 30 is operated to close a switch 26, whereby a solenoid 112 is energized, via a closed element 145 of the selector switch, to position feeler 12 adjacent the welt and a relay K1 is also energized to close contacts K1B in the circuit of switch 28. Contacts K5A in the latter circuit are closed when a relay K5 is energized, energization of relay K5 being maintained, Division D1, as long as the needle thread is intact and the stitches are being correctly set. Closure of switch 28 by feeler 12 thereby energizes relay K3 to close contacts K3B for energizing the knifeactuating solenoid 20. Closure of contacts K3B also energizes a relay K4 which, after a delay, closes contacts K4A to energize a relay K2. The latter then opens contacts K2A for de-energizing the feeler-positioning solenoid 112, and also opens contacts K2B for de-energizing the knife-actuating solenoid 20. Specification 418,823 is referred to.
