A device for assembling a fuel cartridge comprising a cylindrical fuel element support bracket 7 within a graphite sleeve 10, the bracket being attached to the sleeve as disclosed in Specification 1,077,253 by four discs 11 co-operating with an annular groove 12 in the sleeve and with recesses 13 in the bracket, comprises a cylindrical body 16 on the surface 18 of which the sleeve 10 may temporarily be placed. A plunger 20 biased upwardly by a spring 21 within the body 16 temporarily carries on a flange 27a the bracket 7 which is retained by blade springs 26. The discs 11 are temporarily retained in slots 28 in the body 16 by blade springs 29. When the plunger 20 is moved down by a lever 33 co-operating with a plunger pin 32, ramps 39 on the plunger move the discs outwardly into the groove 12, the discs entering the recesses 13, whereby the bracket 7 is detached from the plunger.
